Pediatric Post-Acute Rehabilitation

Long-term, high-quality care for children recovering from severe illness or serious injury, and for those living with long-term or chronic conditions

Overview

Pediatric post-acute care provides long-term, high-quality care for children admitted with a severe illness or serious injury, and for those facing long-term or lifelong chronic conditions. Children need particular care — not only because they are more vulnerable, but because their risk of complications from chronic conditions, and from prolonged hospitalization, can be greater.

Our post-acute care provides children with the treatment they need alongside physical and mental health therapy, supporting recovery, comfort, and confidence.

  • Children recovering from a severe illness or serious injury
  • Children recovering from major surgery, including post-surgical complications
  • Children living with long-term, chronic, or lifelong conditions or disabilities
  • Children with special health care needs who benefit from constant professional care

Depending on each child’s needs, post-acute care may be provided across different settings, for shorter or longer periods:

  • In-hospital post-acute care — for children with special health care needs or recovering from major surgery or treatment, with continuous supervision
  • Pediatric rehabilitation — short- or long-term, for children experiencing significant pain, trauma, or long-term illness, helping reduce the impact of chronic conditions
  • Residential pediatric care — short- or long-term care for children recovering from major surgery, undergoing long-term treatment, or living with permanent disabilities

Care is shaped around each child and may include:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Psychological / psychiatry therapy
  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Medication management
  • Teaching coping mechanisms and self-management skills
  • Teaching self-management while treating chronic pain or illness
  • Helping children develop ways to cope with long-term health problems
  • Preparing children with severe disabilities to lead as full and normal a life as possible
  • Minimizing post-surgery complications for children recovering from major surgery or treatment

With consistent, professional post-acute care, many children see real improvements — less pain, better physical function, lower anxiety and improved emotional wellbeing, better sleep, and stronger coping and social interaction.

Steady recovery can also mean fewer post-surgical complications and less need for readmission.

A dedicated care setting matters just as much for children as it does for adults.
