Palliative Care

Compassionate, whole-person care that relieves pain and difficult symptoms, eases stress and protects quality of life for patients living with serious illness — alongside dedicated support for their families

Overview

Palliative care focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life. At Cambridge Hospital, a specialized team works alongside your treating doctors to manage pain and symptoms, ease emotional strain, and support both patients and families through serious illness — at any stage, and alongside any other treatment.

Palliative care is specialized care for people living with a serious or long-term illness.

Its goal is not to replace the treatment of the illness itself, but to relieve the suffering that comes with it — pain, difficult symptoms, and the emotional weight of being unwell — so that patients can live as fully and comfortably as possible.

It focuses on the whole person, not just the diagnosis, and it extends that care to the family alongside the patient. Palliative care can begin at any point in a serious illness and can be provided at the same time as treatments intended to cure or control the disease.

Palliative care is defined by need, not by a single diagnosis. It helps people living with a wide range of serious conditions — advanced neurological illness, the after-effects of a severe stroke, chronic respiratory disease, cancer, complex chronic illness, and the needs of patients on long-term ventilation.

It is appropriate for patients of any age, including children living with serious illness, whose comfort and development are cared for with the same attention. Wherever there is serious illness and a need for relief and support, palliative care has a role.

Comfort should not depend on where a patient happens to be.

Cambridge Hospital provides palliative support within our inpatient and long-term care settings, and continues that care into the home through our home health care services — so patients can be cared for in the place where they feel most at ease, surrounded by the people they love.

The same coordinated team and care plan follow the patient across settings, keeping support consistent as needs evolve.

Good palliative care is a team effort. At Cambridge Hospital, doctors, specialist nurses, therapists, dietitians, and psychosocial and spiritual support staff work together around a shared plan built on each patient’s goals and values.

This coordinated approach means nothing falls through the gaps — physical symptoms, emotional needs, and family concerns are all addressed together, by people who communicate with one another and with you.
